While at Goddard, one of the missions I worked on was the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Mission - the fourth NASA Solar Terrestrial Probe. The point of this mission was to use the Earth’s magnetosphere as a laboratory to study the microphysics of magnetic reconnection.

In this post we build some visual intuition about what convnets can do using Tie-Dye Networks - which are simple graphics that I've found helpful in building visual intuition about what goes on inside neural networks.

I attended 2016's Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) conference in Las Vegas with my Ditto Labs colleague Arel Cordero. The core threads this year's were visual question & answering, semantic segmentation, and fine-grained classifications and embeddings. 

Deep learning is a branch of computer vision where we teach a computer how to understand what’s inside an image by feeding the computer examples. At Ditto labs, we use this technology to empower marketers to sift through terabytes of photos to find the pixels that matter.

In graduate school when I taught a few abstract algebra courses, students would sometimes remember the quadratic formula and ask if there was a cubic formula, and how that works. Well here goes!
