The ballet "Parade" (by J. Cocteau) had stage designs by Pablo Picasso and music by Erik Satie. After seeing this performed in 1917, a French writer named Guillaume Apollinaire coined the word surrealism when he wrote that the performance revealed "a truth beyond the real, a kind of surrealism".
